How To Fix a Leaky Faucet

Step-by-Step Guide
Gather Your Tools
Before you start, collect all necessary tools and materials. You will need a wrench, Phillips and flathead screwdrivers, replacement washers or O-rings, a towel, and possibly a new entire faucet cartridge.
Turn Off the Water Supply
Locate the water shut-off valves under your sink. Turn these to stop the flow of water. If you can't find them, turn off the main water supply for your home.
Drain the Faucet
Turn on the faucet to allow any remaining water to drain out. This will make the repair process easier and cleaner.
Remove the Faucet Handle
Look for a screw holding the handle in place. This may be under a decorative cap. Use your flathead screwdriver to pry off the cap, if necessary, then unscrew the handle and remove it.
Remove the Packing Nut
Using your wrench, loosen and remove the packing nut. This may require a bit of force as it can be tightly secured.
Inspect the Parts
Once the packing nut is removed, carefully take out the stem or cartridge from the faucet. Inspect O-rings or washers for any signs of wear or damage.
Replace Damaged Parts
If you find worn washers or O-rings, replace them with new, appropriately-sized pieces. If the cartridge itself is damaged, replace it with a new one. Take the old parts to the hardware store to ensure you get the correct replacements.
Reassemble the Faucet
Replace the stem or cartridge back into the faucet, then secure the packing nut using your wrench. Be careful not to over-tighten. Replace the faucet handle and secure it with the screw you removed earlier.
Turn the Water Supply Back On
Carefully turn the water supply back on, either at the valves under the sink or at the main supply. Check for any leaks as water flows back into the faucet.
Test the Faucet
Turn on the faucet to ensure it operates smoothly and that there are no leaks. If everything seems fine, clean up your tools and enjoy your leak-free faucet.
